SEXUAL HEALTH EDUCATION CHECKLIST

PRESCHOOL CHECKLIST (Ages 2-4)

Your preschooler needs to know:
¸ The names for genitals—penis, testicles, scrotum, anus, vulva, vagina, clitoris, uterus, ovaries;
¸ That reproduction happens when a man’s sperm joins a woman’s ovum by sexual intercourse;
¸ That the baby grows in the uterus;
¸ That the baby is born through the vagina;
¸ The basics about menstruation and nocturnal emissions (wet dreams) as clean and healthy processes;
¸ Not to pick up condoms or needles;
¸ That the have ownership of their bodies.

PRIMARY CHECKLIST (Ages 4-8)

Your primary child needs to know everything preschoolers need to know, plus:
¸ The following scientific words: urine, stool, bladder, urethra;
¸ The distinction between the digestive and reproductive systems;
¸ Full information about menstruation and nocturnal emissions;
¸ Basic/introductory information about body changes at puberty.

INTERMEDIATE CHECKLIST (Ages 8-12)

Your intermediate child needs to know everything the previous age groups have learned, plus:
¸ All about physical and emotional changes at puberty;
¸ Basic information about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

You should also discuss the following topics:
¸ The false and exaggerated sexuality portrayed in pornography and the exploitation of participants;
¸ The understanding that most teens are not sexually active;
¸ The distorted, popular and commercialized views of "the perfect body".

ADOLESCENT CHECKLIST (Ages 13-17)

Your adolescent child needs to know everything the previous age groups have learned, plus:
¸ The proper use of contraceptive devices, and their potential failure;
¸ Detailed information about STDs.

They should also be working to develop:
¸ An understanding of intimate relationships;
¸ An understanding of their personal sexuality-related values and boundaries;
¸ Relationship and communication skills;
¸ Refusal and assertiveness skills;
¸ Confidence when going to a doctor.
